Gerard L. and Fannie A. C. Parker scrapbook, 1898 Nov.-Dec.

Collection consists of a 42-page disbound scrapbook documenting a trip the Parkers made via steamer and rail from Washington, D.C., through Virginia, North and South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana, and Tennessee. Since the Parkers were newlyweds, the trip may have combined a honeymoon with business, for the two visited lumber and woodworking companies as well as tourist sites. Ephemera include train and boat schedules, menus, maps, postcards, letterhead, and travel literature they gathered during the trip, primarily focused on their accommodations and means of travel. In addition, there are thirty-seven 3.5" x 3.5" faded albumen photographs they took featuring images of street scenes, manufacturing plants, hotels, and tourist locations, along with a few of their hosts, railway staff, and fellow travelers. Among the hotels represented are the Chamerlin (Old Point Comfort, Va.), Jefferson (Richmond, Va.), Jarell's (High Point, N.C.), Arlington (Augusta, Ga.), Charleston (Charleston, S.C.), De Soto (Savannah, Ga.), Kimball (Atlanta, Ga.), Marion (Atlanta, Ga.), Battle House (Mobile, Ala.), New St. Charles (New Orleans, La.), and Lookout Inn (Lookout Mountain, Tenn.). Published drawings and photographs with interior and exterior views of these hotels are often included. Woodworking and lumber plants noted are Guilford Lumber Manufacturing Co., Southern Chair Co., and Augusta Lumber Co. In addition, the couple visited the Atlanta Exposition Grounds, Mammoth Cave, and the Lookout Mountain and Chicamauga battlefields. Some of the published literature they gathered featured stereotypical images of African American life, such as a photograph showing a group of children eating watermelons. The final pages of the scrapbook hold notarized bills of health from the Health Department in Washington, D.C., certifying that both Parkers were free from contagious disease before beginning their trip to New Orleans. Acquired as part of the George Washington Flowers Collection of Southern Americana.

Gerard Lester Parker (1866- ) and Fannie Arnold Carpenter were each born in Norwich, Conn. Parker married Carpenter on 8 December 1897, and the two resided in Brookline, Mass. Gerard Parker was involved with the maufacture of woodworking machinery, and was employed with manufacturer Austin & Eddy in Boston at the time this scrapbook was created.
